Stoneygate School

Prep-Plus (Years 9-11)

The Curriculum

Stoneygate School will offer a range of GCSE options to pupils from September 2018.  The preparatory work for this will be undertaken by a new Year 9 cohort which will start in September 2017.

The thinking behind this is to provide an offer which is:

- Distinct from that available at Leicester Grammar School.

- Traditionally academic at core.

- Linked to the existing strengths of Stoneygate School.

- Unique (or at very least rare) when compared to those offered by other independent schools.

Year 9

In Year 9, subjects will remain the same as those currently offered to Year 8 pupils.  However, during the course of the year the pupils will be given ‘taster sessions’ of the full range of GCSE options. These will range from short courses in Textiles as part of the Art curriculum, to sample lessons in Spanish, Business, Fine Art and the other subjects that would be new to pupils.

GCSEs: Year 10 & Year 11

Stoneygate pupils entering Year 10 will be expected to take 9 GCSEs.

The 5 core GCSEs which will be taken by all pupils will be:

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • a Science (at least one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • a Modern Foreign Language (at least one of French, Spanish)

We are introducing a new programme of enrichment activities known together as ‘The Stoneygate Training & Enrichment Programme’ (‘STEP’).  The notion here is to prepare Stoneygate’s pupils for the wider world beyond their GCSEs.

STEP will be based on three core principles:

  1. Practical Skills
  2. Leadership
  3. World Perspectives

It will involve all of Stoneygate’s GCSE pupils spending their Friday afternoons each week involved in a range of organised and supervised activities that will develop them as young people and help them to stand out from others of their age. Each term’s activities will follow a theme:

Autumn term – Practical Skills

This course will be varied and flexible to meet with individual needs; courses range from Animal Welfare to Floristry.

Spring term – World Perspectives

This is a dynamic course that looks at a variety of Global issues from economics to politics.

Summer term - Leadership

Our Leadership programme is both motivational and educational.

Four other subjects will be chosen from:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • French
  • Spanish
  • History
  • Geography
  • Religious Studies
  • Fine Art
  • Textiles
  • Business
  • Psychology
  • Music

Post 16 education

Should pupils wish to complete their education within the Trust, pupils from Stoneygate (having gained the necessary entrance grades of 2As and 4Bs and a recommendation from the Head), would be guaranteed a place in the sixth form at LGS.
