Year 9 to 11
Moving Towards GCSE
Stoneygate School offers a range of GCSE options to current Year 9 pupils that are:
- Traditionally academic at core.
- Linked to the existing strengths of Stoneygate School.
In Year 9, subjects remain the same as those currently offered to Year 8 pupils. However, during the course of the year the pupils will be given ‘taster sessions’ of the full range of GCSE options. These will vary from short courses in Textiles as part of the Art curriculum, to sample lessons in Spanish, Physical Education and the other subjects that would be new to pupils.
GCSEs: Year 10 & Year 11
Stoneygate pupils entering Year 10 are expected to take 9 GCSEs. The 5/6 core GCSEs taken by all pupils will be:
- English Language
- English Literature
- Combined Science (equivalent to 2 GCSEs)*
- Triple Science (3 GCSEs)*
The GCSE Options
Pupils choose a further 3 to 4 GCSE options depending on their science choice.* We encourage pupils to take one Modern Foreign Language and one Humanities subject. Pupils will be offered the following options:
- Art, Craft and Design
- Computer Science
- Physical Education
- Religious Studies
STEP: Stoneygate Training & Enrichment Programme
A new programme of enrichment activities known as STEP takes place one afternoon a week throughout Year 10 and 11. We want to prepare Stoneygate’s pupils for the wider world beyond their GCSEs.
STEP is based on three core areas:
Enterprise: Pupils will run their own business growing and selling vegetables. Through this Enterprise pupils will learn and understand the basic processes of business: initial outlays, markets, profit/loss and the importance of time.
Leadership: Pupils will plan and lead a 'mountain expedition'. This will involve project leadership, decision making and communication skills - all vital tools in business.
World Perspectives: This is a dynamic course that looks at a variety of Global Issues from economics to politics.
Post 16 education
Should pupils wish to complete their education within the Trust, pupils from Stoneygate (having gained the minimum of 3 GCSEs Grade 7 or more, accompanied by a minimum of 3 further GCSEs at Grade 6 or more, together with a recommendation from the Headmaster), would be guaranteed a place in the sixth form at Leicester Grammar School.
