Years 1 and 2

The transition from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1 is smooth.  Children spend much of their day with a class teacher and teaching assistant, learning the core disciplines of maths, literacy and science and a wide range of other subjects.  We read every day with each child, teaching phonics and developing comprehension skills. Specialist teaching in PE, swimming, dance and music begins at this young age. Learning is guided by the National Curriculum but we have the freedom to adapt the curriculum to appeal to children’s individual interests. The children participate in many educational visits and often speakers and groups visit the school, enhancing learning and bringing topics to life.  Homework is given to reinforce and extend learning, whilst enabling children to develop independence in their own work.

The curriculum is broad and rich and there are many opportunities for the children to perform – the Christmas show, singing and musical concerts and Year 2 take part in a local singing festival.  Clubs are offered at lunch time and after school including gymnastics, swimming, tennis, football, sports and Tae-Kwon-Do.

Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress by a twice yearly written report and parents’ afternoon in the autumn and spring terms.  Staff are readily accessible at the beginning and the end of the day and are keen to work with parents to ensure that each child achieves their full potential.
